Art, whatever the media, creates something where once there was none: colour and surprise, attention and focus, patterns and anomalies. I would say my own art, like my writing, is influenced by the "spiritual" and "ministerial" in the numerous possible interpretations of those words. That necessarily means noticing, living in, and sitting with the natural world--but also carrying that attention and reflection into action. In other words, I am always looking for ways to understand this world and to inspire others to notice, to reflect, to create, to create change.

Photography
My writing is also linked to my love of photography, which started when an uncle gave me his old Nikon camera (manual, of course) with an amazing array of lenses and other equipment that I had no idea how to use. I took classes and spent many hours wandering around the wooded areas in which we lived (Tennessee during my teenage years), hoping to capture small slices of life in the afternoon light with that camera. Back then I usually had the photos developed into slides (cheaper), with no option for editing unless I spent time in a darkroom, which I only had access to when taking classes. Nowadays, I use two DSLR cams -- a Nikon and a Canon, and I like to play around with the manual mode features in particular. I have no claim to any high-end knowledge of photography but I know I love capturing moments of light and colour and wonder in the world around me.
